GOING BACKWARDS - Panel discussion @ Bluecoat
This discussion explores themes from The Dinner Party: Of Time and Place, an exhibition at Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead (23rd June-3rd September 2017).
The exhibition takes Sam Walsh’s painting The Dinner Party, shown at Bluecoat in 1980, as a starting point to revisit a group of artists working in Liverpool from the late 1950s to the 80s - Arthur Ballard, Maurice Cockrill, Adrian Henri, Don McKinlay and Walsh himself.
Their interconnected art and personal lives created a distinctive art scene in the city, and the event will compare this to today’s creative communities.
Panelists include Radio Merseyside presenter Roger Philips, the poet, writer and critic Edward Lucie-Smith, Bluecoat’s Artistic Director Bryan Biggs, Paris-based art historian Catherine Marcangeli, Pop Art academic Oliver Gilbert, and sculptor Robin Riley, a contemporary of the artists.
